Heavily inspired by 1997 video game Final Fantasy VII, “debug7” is a journey to aztechsounds’ roots and mixes his childhood memories with imagery from the game.

Speaking about the album, aztechsounds says: “It feels personal. It’s these really early influences that I’ve been more conscious of while I was making it. Final Fantasy VII, that’s what I spent all my time doing when I was younger. My nan got me the soundtrack album for Christmas. That was the first CD of electronic music I ever had.

“It’s based on stuff I liked when I was younger. There’s been a lot of focus in my personal life and in therapy, of having a dialogue between me and the bit of me that is still a child. It has felt cathartic to go: ‘What would I have liked to listen to when I was a kid?’ Hey, kid Maik, here’s what I made for you.”

The album’s song titles are all inspired by symbols found in Final Fantasy VII and musically, aztechsounds incorporates references to the game’s soundtrack while also building on his own imagery. “Bird” evokes images of a bird picking corn off the ground, while “Capital” feels more cold and uncomfortable.

aztechsounds adds: “From the ground up, this was made with the entire album in mind. I tried to make it sound warming and welcoming. Every piece of it was written in the first place I’ve ever lived where I felt comfortable by myself, so it’s born out of an environment where I felt like it’s all me. It’s designed to be played here. It’s for solitary listening.”
